Video of the Day
Start Fresh
Before you begin to organize your kitchen, give yourself a fresh start. Begin by removing everything from your kitchen cabinets. This sounds like a big job, but you should only have to do this once. Once you have everything out of your cabinets, go through every item and decide if you really need it or not. If there are dishes that you don't use, donate them. If there are canned goods that are expired, trash them. Anything you don't use should at this point.
Place Like Items Together
Think about the placement of items before you start filling your cabinets back up. If you have open shelving in your kitchen, you probably want to put your more attractive pieces on those shelves. The basic rule of thumb for cabinet organization is to place drinking glasses together, bowls and plates together, and other like items together.
Place All Plastic Dinnerware in One Place
Put all of your plastic dinnerware together in one easy-to-reach place. This way they're ready to go for outdoor entertaining, or for when younger kids want a snack or a drink.
Place Canned Goods on a Tiered Shelf
Placing canned goods on a tiered shelf will allow you to see what you have available, and will keep you from stacking cans that could fall over and create a mess.
Place Dry Goods in Clear Glass Jars
Instead of having unsightly open bags and boxes of your dry goods, place them in clear glass jars. This way you can see what you have and how much you have of each item. This will make running out of certain things less likely, and your dry goods will stay fresh longer. Plus, they look pretty!
Tip
Trace the lid of the jar on some kraft paper and insert under the top lid ring to label your jars with ease. You can even add a date to the label so you know when an item needs to be discarded.
Store Loose Items in Bins or Baskets
If you have loose items, corral them in a plastic bin or basket. This way they don't take up as much space and you can access them more easily. Also, it's a perfect place to put portioned-out snacks so kids can help themselves when they're hungry.
Store Cleaning Supplies Under the Kitchen Sink
Use the area under your kitchen sink to store cleaning items, trash bags, dish washing detergent and other items you need to keep your kitchen clean.

Warning
Install child safety latches or locks on lower cabinet doors that hold anything that may be harmful to children. Even if you don't have children, this is a good idea in case you have any little visitors or if you have pets.
